India’s attack on gold continues as officials at the Reserve Bank of India said banks would not be allowed to give loans against units of gold exchange-traded funds.   They also want to limit bank loans to 50 grams of gold per customer.  Sounds like a black market opportunity in gold over there.

Surge In Consumer Confidence

According to the Conference Board’s measure, there has been a surge in consumer confidence and it has hit 2008 levels.    The surge is so pronounced that people with plans to buy a home, a car, or a television within the next six months fell.    Something tells me that they do not know what surge really means.

U.S. Mint Resumes Selling 1/10 Ounce Gold Coins

The U.S. mint has once again restocked on the popular 1/10 ounce denomination with a 20,000 production limit.    The coin will set you back just 195 dollars.    So, in effect, about a 40 dollar mark-up from the price of gold.   Sounds like someone is making a killing here.

Farmer Acquitted

Wisconsin farmer Vernon Hershberger, who was prosecuted for selling raw milk to willing consumers was acquitted.    Jurors found him innocent of producing and selling raw milk, and cheese, without a license.   The verdict means he can continue to sell his farm’s products to members of a buying club he started.    So, to those who are against true capitalism and free enterprise…   Go sit and spin!

If this sounds familiar then you may be right.    The U.S. Mint did not sell any US Silver Eagles in December because it ran out of silver.    The 2013 Silver Eagles went on sale on January 7th and by the 17th…    They were gone!      In short, get the physical silver while it is cheap folks.

Big Government Fail

FEMA appears to have been completely unprepared to distribute supplies, like bottled water, to Hurricane Sandy victims when the storm hit.   In fact,  FEMA officials had to tap private vendors for extra water until they can get supplied with water, and other supplies, later.    Perhaps, if FEMA administrators were more interested in their mandate, than buying bullets, body bags, and setting up detention camps, they could have been ready.    At any rate, this just goes to show how centralized authority will fail when it really counts.

Societies, in which individuals are more responsible for themselves, grow more than those in which they are less responsible for themselves.    For example, many countries in Europe, like Greece, Italy, Spain, and France rank at the very bottom of self-sufficiency.    On the other hand, Asian countries like Korea, China, and India rank at the top.    Easy welfare and social programs make people lazy and non-productive, which drops the overall productivity of a society.    In short, if people have to earn money to spend it, they have to be more productive.

Illinois Teachers’ Retirement System Broke

Expecting to get 8.5% on returns for fiscal year 2012, the Illinois Teacher Retirement System, or TRS. got 0.76% instead.   Hell, if they had just purchased gold for the year, they would have easily made over 8.5%.    The TRS has less than 23% of the money it should have in the bank today in order to make its pension payments.    In short, the Illinois TRS is broke and will most likely soon be insolvent.
